Inter-professional Research Applications


Research applications are due on October 1, 2022. Awarded projects will receive notification on October 15, 2023 through email. Research summations are due by January 15, 2023.

Project Guidelines

Projects are expected to explore the purpose of 3D printing within healthcare practices and education. Funding will cover the cost of materials. All funded research must result in scholarly activity and include a 3D printed production element made on the 3D printing equipment in the Methodology Lab. The Methodology Lab Staff can offer design assistance, but participants are encouraged to have a member or members able to assist with model design and development. All applications must specify a specific printing process and materials that can be printed on the following equipment: (1) stereolithography printers, such as the Formlabs Form 3 and Prusa SL1 or, (2) Fused Filament Fabrication printers such as the Prusa MK3 series. However, if the requested 3D printing process is deemed unacceptable by staff, the team will receive assistance with selecting the appropriate printing process and materials.  As such, initial applications may require some revision if a more appropriate 3D printing process is identified. All human research studies must be reviewed by the IRB before they begin and throughout the project to evaluate risks to subjects and compliance with federal regulations and institutional policies.


Project budgets must include projections for material costs based on $0.40 per ml for photo-polymer resins and $0.20 per gram for filaments. FORM3 Printer material allocations should include the cost of resin and resin tank. In addition, budget projections should include the cost of 3D printing multiple versions of design prototypes, along with the cost of material used in the final design. Slicing software listed below can be used to estimate material usage and print times. Special material requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis. If special materials are approved, project timelines must allow for delays that may result in shipping and receiving of materials.

Equipment Usage

Faculty may use the 3D printing lab during maker space hours or by appointment.  Certain equipment is off limits to student use without supervision from onsite staff.
