Qualitative Research: Qualitative vs. Quantitative

Qualitative Methods in Biomedical Research

Quantitative Studies

Quantitative research investigates information that can be measured through numeric expressions. Deductive in its approach, it assesses phenomenon through a formal, objective, and systematic means that often involve statistical analysis. Common metrics associated with quantitative studies include descriptive, correlational, quasi-experimental and experimental.

Qualitative Studies

Qualitative research measures information through a range of processes and procedures whereby significant non-quantifiable data is collected and interpreted through further data analysis. This type of research uses an inductive approach to assess data for a suitable explanation of its relevance. In critically appraising the truth value of descriptions or interpretations, it aims to provide insight into social, emotional, and experiential phenomena.
