Evidence Based Nursing Practice: Critical Appraisal of the Literature

The purpose of this guide is to provide resources that will guide nursing students in the process of evidence based practice.

Critically Appraise the Literature

Step 3 in the Evidence-Based Nursing Practice process is to critically appraise the evidence and then synthesize it to answer your clinical question.

  • Start by carefully reading the methods section of the research articles.
  • Determine the quality of the research. This is called "critical appraisal".
  • Select the articles that provide the best evidence.

Critical appraisal technique can vary for articles of therapy, diagnosis, harm, prognosis, and systematic reviews.  Here are some tutorials will help you learn how to critically appraise research studies.

How to Understand Research Articles

Chapters 4 and 5 describe how to evaluate the research methods and the appropriate use of statistics in research articles.
