Evidence-Based Medicine for the MSIII Surgery Clerkship: Course Description & Syllabus

Course Materials and Resources

Course Description & Syllabus

Course Description

The EBM Surgery Clerkship is comprised of three sessions which you must attend and several exercises you must complete. The first session is an orientation and hands-on literature search class instructed by medical librarians in which students will be led through a series of databases and tools in an effort to accelerate their proficiency in locating EBM resources. The second session is a research database course where students will meet 1-on-1 with a reference librarian and locate at least one evidence-based article which answers a clinical or research question of the individual student’s choice.  The question can be surgical in nature though this is not required. Formulate your clinical or research question into the PICO format on the PICO worksheet and e-mail it to Dr. Griswold and the reference librarians.

Following their 1-on-1 session, students will critically appraise their article using a critical appraisal worksheet from the designated EBM Toolkit at Dartmouth's EBM page. This is a submission requirement that must be completed by the time of the discussion group session with Dr. Griswold. Make sure you are aware of which group you are in for the discussion session. In this class, you will report your findings in a journal club-like atmosphere. Group discussions may occur on week six or seven based upon Dr. Griswold's schedule. Your coordinator will select which group discussion class you attend based around your night float schedule. This is an informal presentation that does not require a PowerPoint, or handouts, etc.  However, students are expected to turn in their EBM report that includes their PICO question worksheet, critical appraisal worksheet, a copy of the article (or abstract), and a cover sheet.
